Patti Houghton-Arrison studied English and Art History at Smith College and received her master's degree in English from UVM. For many years she worked as the rare book specialist at Dartmouth's Special Collections Library, which has an extensive collection of early printings of Shakespeare's plays, including the First Folio of 1623.
This
discussion group is designed for those who have never read Shakespeare's plays
and are afraid to try them on their own. Patti wants participants to discover how easy
it is to read and enjoy Shakespeare. We will read together, usually one act per
week, stopping whenever we want to discuss what is happening in the play. Patti
will provide help in understanding the language and the poetic form, but wants
all members of the group to feel comfortable participating. This fall's
selection, The Merchant of Venice,
should provoke lively discussions, because it has acquired a somewhat
controversial reputation over its 500 year history. We will end with a special, Saturday
afternoon session, during which we will critique clips from movies and stage
productions.
